Do you know what these terms mean?
Low-income Spanish and English speaking-parents are expected to understand the meaning of these and many other words and how they will affect their child's health and education. Instead, they are overwhelmed with navigating complex medical and education systems and find themselves asking...
“What does this diagnosis mean? Who can help me in my community? Why do I feel this way? How can I help my child? Who are all these specialists and what should I ask them? How can I care for the rest of my family?”
Growing Roots, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization was created to help parents answer these questions. We believe that all families, regardless of cultural, linguistic or socioeconomic differences deserve an opportunity to learn how to support their child. Through hands-on classes and support groups led by health care professionals and parents, parents learn about their child's medical and educational needs, connect with resources in their commuity and receive support from other parents.
The end result is parents become empowered and active participants regarding their child's needs- establishing and growing their "roots" to improve outcomes for their child.
